We're all used to people going back and finding the yearbook quotes of famous people.
But only in this age of instant global communication could your yearbook quote actually make you famous.
Megan Kelly, who's graduating this year from Ballenas Secondary School, decided that these would be the forever words beside her photo in the yearbook: "Master has given Megan a high school diploma, Megan is freeeee!" The words are based on a line from the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry tricks the nasty Lucius Malfoy into giving one of Harry's socks to Dobby, Malfoy's house-elf slave.
The act sets Dobby free, so when Malfoy orders him to come, Dobby tells him: "Master has presented Dobby with clothes! Dobby is free!" Wanting to share her yearbook words with her friends, Megan posted them to her account on the social networking website Tumblr beside her graduation photo.
She soon had 100,000 'likes' on Tumblr and then these 'friends' began migrating it to other social media platforms.
Someone with the internet name of "scrapeandclean" posted it to Reddit, a digital bulletin board which bills itself as "the front page of the internet."
People post things there and then users around the world vote each item "up" or "down" the rankings.
At one point, Megan's yearbook quote had climbed to number eight on Reddit's "hot" list - in the world! Reddit's editors commented on the post: "I do believe she won this round of 'best yearbook quote.'" This was accompanied by 339 comments from other users as far-flung as Mexico, Scotland, Sweden and Russia: "Is this a reference to something that I don't get or am I just dense?" and "Now she's free?? Ohh wait 'til her first 9-5 job. She will miss this 'confinement' she suffered" and "That quote socks," as well as a fair dose of the usual internet drek which thankfully gets edited out of newspapers.
The Russian website vk.com posted the photo with 37 comments, mainly about translating the word "master." Some thought it was "owner," others "host."
None of the posts appear to reference Harry Potter.
All the internet activity caught the eye of Huffington Post Canada, which picked it up and posted it and then made it the top story on Huffington Post Canada Teen, the page dominated by the darkish, off-centre photo and quote Megan hadn't spent much time on because she was just sharing it with her friends. "Potterheads, brace yourselves," the Huff Post said, "because the ultimate yearbook quote has been uncovered. Reddit user scrapeand-clean took to the social site to post what may be one of the most geektastic quotes we've stumbled upon." This was accompanied by upwards of 200 comments: "Freeeee, and unemployed" and "Until the tyrannical bonds of student loans begin" and "Megan received a sock for graduating high school."
Megan, an accomplished athlete and student who doesn't mind being called "geektastic" (she's headed for the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria), has a pretty good understanding of social media and the internet but is nonetheless shocked by what happened to her yearbook quote.
Friends, softball teammates and international students hosted over the years by her parents Mike and Jane are telling her to check it out on this site and check it out on that site.
Her quote is all over the place, all over the world.
The view-counting website imgur.com had, by Wednesday, counted over 1.2 million views.
One friend asked her jokingly if she had to make an appointment for lunch with her now that she's "internet famous."
"Kind of scary how fast this spread," Megan says. "Sure glad I had a good yearbook picture."
/ Megan Kelly posted this hastily cropped image to her Tumblr account to share her yearbook quote with her friends. As of midday Wednesday, it had been viewed on the internet 1,225,562 times.;
